The Presbyterian Church (USA) has several levels of governing structure.
The session, with its elected ruling elders, guides the life and ministry of
a local congregation. Churches next are grouped, usually geographically,
into a larger governing body called a presbytery and send elder commissioners
and ministers to participate in the meetings. Our church is one of 93 churches
in Muskingum Valley Presbytery which covers much of the central east and southeast
parts of the state of Ohio. Presbyteries are grouped into regions called Synods.
We are one of 11 presbyteries in Ohio and Michigan that make up the Synod of
the Covenant The synod coordinates ministries that can most effectively be handled
at a regional level. The largest governing body is the General Assembly at the
national level It meets every two years. Presbyteries elect elders and ministers
as commissioners to gather, consider and vote on matters that concern the life of
the denomination. Just as presbyteries elect commissioners to send to General
Assembly, they also elect commissioners to serve at the Synod level.
